Know before traveling

Safety: While most of Turkey is safe and welcoming for tourists, some regions—especially near the borders with Syria and Iraq are not recommended due to security concerns, Always check the latest travel advisories from your government, avoid political demonstrations, and remain vigilant in crowded places and tourist areas.

Respect Local Customs: Dress modestly, especially when visiting religious sites or conservative areas—covering shoulders, legs, and, for women, sometimes hair. 

Currency and Payments: The official currency is the Turkish Lira (TRY). Credit and debit cards are widely accepted in cities, but cash is essential for small shops, markets, and rural areas.

Mistakes to avoid

Tipping: In many touristy areas service fee is usually included in the bill. Check it beforehand to avoid double tipping.

Common Tourist Scams: Tourists are often targeted by scams like the “nightlife trap” (being invited by strangers to bars and given inflated bills), the “change trick” (vendors giving incorrect change), and the “shoeshine ruse” (offering unsolicited services and then demanding payment). 

Bargaining: Bargaining is a normal part of shopping in Turkish markets and bazaars. Not negotiating prices can lead to overpaying for goods and services. Approach bargaining with a friendly attitude,it’s expected and part of the local culture.
